The partnership between EBSMEDA and the Ministry of Trade & Investment is anchored on five strategic pillars: joint funding schemes for financial empowerment, vocational training for artisans, development of commercial infrastructure, trade and export promotion, and business-friendly policy reforms. Together, these efforts have significantly advanced SME growth in Ebonyi State, supporting entrepreneurs with access to finance, skills, markets, and enabling environments—ultimately positioning the state as an emerging commercial and investment hub.
EBSMEDA and the Ministry of Trade and Investment have co-developed inclusive financing channels to empower micro, small, and medium enterprises across Ebonyi State. Through pooled funds from state, federal, and private-sector sources—including the Bank of Industry, Zenith Bank, and the CBN—both agencies support loan disbursement, grants, and credit schemes tailored for traders, agribusinesses, and artisans. The Ministry facilitates regulatory oversight and policy direction, while EBSMEDA ensures grassroots access, financial literacy, and post-disbursement monitoring.
The Ministry leads major infrastructural projects such as the development of the International Market at Onuebonyi, market renovation schemes, and the establishment of industrial estates. EBSMEDA complements these efforts by clustering small businesses within these spaces, setting up incubation and support services, and ensuring that SME voices are represented in the planning and allocation of shop and workspace units. Together, they’re ensuring that entrepreneurs don’t just access physical space, but also the support needed to thrive there.
One of their standout joint initiatives is the Skill-Up Ebonyi program, which equips artisans with advanced trade skills while linking them to formal markets and industrial hubs. EBSMEDA plays a hands-on role in training coordination and post-training support, while the Ministry oversees infrastructure development and integration into trade zones—like the upcoming Ezzamgbo Industrial Cluster. Over 200 artisans have already benefitted, receiving free tools, mentorship, and permanent business locations to begin their entrepreneurial journeys.
The partnership also focuses on expanding Ebonyi’s trade footprint beyond state borders. EBSMEDA supports the Ministry in preparing SMEs to participate in local and international trade expos—including AGRODEF, Lagos International Trade Fair, and Kaduna and Enugu trade showcases. In addition, both institutions collaborate on export-readiness programs, fast-tracking access to CAC and export certificates, training SMEs on packaging and compliance, and connecting businesses to regional and continental markets.
Together, EBSMEDA and the Ministry champion business-friendly reforms through policy coordination and institutional development. They co-host stakeholder forums, advocate for simplified regulatory processes, and align their programs under the state’s investment roadmap. EBSMEDA drives bottom-up feedback from the SME community, while the Ministry ensures top-down policy integration—especially in initiatives like SABER (State Action on Business Enabling Reforms) and the ongoing ease-of-doing-business reforms across Ebonyi.
